Victoire de Margerie speaks at L’Académie Jolt
The 6th session of L’Académie Jolt took place on May 23rd.
Victoire de Margerie, a member of the French Academy of Technologies, and the founder of the World Materials Forum stopped by to enlighten us about sustainable mining, the recycling of plastics or the decarbonation of cement and steel.
With a growing population, rampant digitisation and massive electrification, we'll need to extract more materials from the Earth in the next 30 years than in the 4 billion previous ones.
We'll need to use less raw materials for a given end result
(today, to build a 0.2kgs phone, you need 350 times more raw material)
We'll need to be smarter in the way we use and share our devices
(today, our cars are only used 5% of the time)
We'll need to extend the lifespan of our products
(today, EV batteries could have a second life as residential energy storage)
At Jolt Capital, we are convinced that recycling will be a land of opportunities for deeptech companies. And that the pundits praising a material-less and ubiquitous metaverse could be in for a huge disappointment...
