The ban on semiconductors export could wreak havoc on the whole Russian industry
Pierre Garnier, one of the Managing Partners at Jolt Capital and former VP of Wireless Baseband Business Unit at Texas Instruments, recently talked to l’AGEFI about the semiconductor ban imposed on Russia:
Can China take over as main supplier of chips to Russia ?
” Most products usually need 8 or 9 types of chips. China is at the world-class level on half of them, but lagging behind on the other half. Russia won’t be able to rely on Chinese chips only to feed its microelectronics industry.”
Can Russia use its stocks while kickstarting new local factories ?
” Building a fab takes 3 years. Upgrading an existing one, 9 months. Stocks in Russia? With the semiconductor shortage of the past 18 months, it’s unlikely Russia has amassed enough components to bridge the gap.”
Could limited access to Russian palladium aggravate the global dearth in semiconductors ?”
Some precious metals are indeed required in small amounts for the semiconductors industry, but if deemed strategic, the industry could temporarily get its supplies elsewhere, even if it has an impact on other less strategic sectors.”
